Biography

Derek has a Computer Engineering degree from the University of Arizona, where he also drew cartoons for the student newspaper. He has been delivering code since before the Internet was in people’s homes. After a couple of decades writing DSP software for scientists in Arizona, he moved to the Seattle area, where he worked at Amazon (on Kindle), Google (on Cloud TPU), and Redfin (on DOCINTEL and Ask Redfin). He’s delighted to be returning to scientific programming, and in the service of a public science project.

When he has free time, he enjoys reading and writing, and (be warned!) talking with great energy about the ideas in the books he reads. He also still draws the occasional cartoon.
